Crown of Thorns

A visual meditation on sacrifice, redemption, and love.

The story behind the image

A Crown of Thorns – For You

By Mark Cannon

During my second year at West Point, in April of 1983, I was hospitalized for several weeks after a severe wrestling injury. As an athlete, I was no stranger to pain, but this time the suffering was almost too much to bear. It was Good Friday. I was alone, exhausted, and at the end of my strength. I prayed for help.

Just before noon, the daily visit from the West Point Chaplain brought unexpected relief. He spoke to me about Christ’s suffering and His ultimate gift of love. Good Friday had always been a sacred, reflective day for me—a time when I felt especially close to God. Even as a child, I was drawn to Jesus on the day of His crucifixion. As a young artist, I often tried to capture on paper the mystery, the power, and the personal meaning of His sacrifice.

When the Chaplain left, I found myself alone again. My hands were sweating from the pain. I reached for my drawing pad and pencils—at first simply to distract myself, but soon it became something more: a cry for mercy and deliverance. His visit had opened a channel of grace within me, pulling me toward something I could not yet name. I began to draw.

Four hours passed in what felt like a single moment. As I worked, I felt my heart open and my body grow stronger. Then suddenly, I found myself staring into the eyes of Jesus Christ—eyes I had drawn with my own hand, yet which now seemed to look back at me with a love and power beyond anything I had ever known. It was as though He Himself had guided my hand, allowing me to see with my eyes and feel with my heart the true depth of His sacrifice.

That moment changed my life. Never before had I felt so loved, so understood. Knowing that my own hand had created His image gave me a renewed sense of purpose. Into the dark struggles that had often clouded my faith, a new light was cast—and that light is Christ.

My prayer is that others may be blessed by this image, just as I was blessed in creating it.
